This effect is the same one Gondry used in The White Stripes video "The Hardest Button to Button." Gondry struggled with moving from the short form subjects to a feature in Human Nature, but he has made an exceptional leap forward on his second feature.

Kate+Winslet+and+Jim+Carrey+star+as+Clementine+and+Joel+in+Eternal+Sunshine+of+the+Spotless+Mind In one scene, Joel and Clementine walk past a fence post that disappears behind them piece by piece as the memory is erased. If you've seen any of Gondry's video's or checked out the recently released DVD The Work of Director Michel Gondry, which features the majority of Gondry's short films and videos, you will notice many similarities, a sort of evolution of Gondry's gift of camera manipulation in Eternal Sunshine. Michel Gondry is primarily known for his visually brilliant music videos for bands like The White Stripes, Daft Punk and Bjork. Kaufman breaks the barriers of conventional storytelling, an artist painting outside the lines. In reality, Kaufman is neither fat nor bald and has no twin brother. In Adaptation, Kaufman actually inserted himself into the story and played off his own insecurities as a fat, bald, unfocused writer and his oafish twin brother Donald who, despite looking exactly the same, has none of the same problems. Dismissing Kaufman's scripts as merely "weird" or "not for everyone" is to overlook their biting comments on reality and portrayal of the dark thoughts everyone has but never admits to. When people hear Kaufman's name attached to a project, they expect bizarre, twist-filled, dark stories that challenge viewers to pay very close attention in order to reap the rewards of Kaufman's gift for storytelling. Kaufman's previous efforts, which include Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and the previously mentioned Human Nature, are some of the most original American scripts of the past two decades. As Joel travels through the memories of his relationship with Clementine, he must find a way to stop the memory wipers from dusting her away. The thing is, after Joel begins the process, he realizes that he doesn't want to lose his memories of the relationship, that what they had, albeit flawed, is worth fighting to keep alive. Distraught and hurt by her actions, Joel decides to do the same thing himself and have Clementine erased from his own memory. Clementine has erased her entire relationship with Joel. Lacuna has developed a process where they can tap into and then erase the painful memories of their clients. Joel goes to Lacuna to explore the situation further. saying that Clementine has had their relationship erased from her mind.

When Joel tries to figure this out, his two friends, husband and wife Rob (David Cross) and Carrie (Jane Adams) show Joel a card they got in the mail from Lacuna, Inc. Beyond that, Clementine looks at Joel as if she's never seen him before in her life. When he attempts to visit her at the Barnes & Noble where she works, he finds she is already dating another guy. After a fight, Clementine has left him and refuses to answer his calls or respond to him. Joel Barish is going through an immense depression after the demise of his relationship with Clementine Kruczynski. Nevertheless, I shall try to give a short rundown. His dark, clever scripts' charm lies in the fact that they often stray so far from the run of the mill, Hollywood storyline. To try to summarize the plot of a Charlie Kaufman-scripted film is a tricky endeavor. By realistic, I mean the realistic, flawed relationship of Clementine (Kate Winslet) and Joel (Jim Carrey), not the memory-erasing plot device.
#ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND REVIEW FULL#
With Eternal Sunshine, although it still may be too strange for some, Kaufman and Gondry have fired at full force on every cylinder to create a beautiful, touching and realistic portrayal of a relationship gone awry. That film had some interesting moments and clever direction, but was ultimately too strange and unfocused to ever appeal to the masses.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the second collaboration by Gondry and Kaufman, the first being 2002's bizarre Human Nature.
